5 Highlights of Ulu Muda

  1. Three large man-made lakes within the Ulu Muda area, namely Muda, Ahning and Pedu
  2. Muda River, the Muda river is the largest river system in Kedah, and provides irrigation for the "rice-bowl" of Malaysia and supplies drinking water to the people of Kedah, Penang and Perlis.
  3. Tualang trees, tallest trees in the tropical forests, grows up to 80m in height. Wild honey gathering is also done on these trees, one tree can accommodate up to 80 honeycombs.
  4. The plain-pouched hornbill is found at Ulu Muda, one of only two sites in Malaysia. The IUCN Redlist (www.iucnredlist.org) as vulnerable to extinction.
  5. Saltlicks too are abundant in Ulu Muda, its high mineral content provides for easier digestion by wildlife.

Survey of Newly - Discovered Limestone Hill at Ulu Muda

The Ulu Muda forest in Kedah is one of WWF-Malaysia's three priority protected area project sites in Peninsular Malaysia. The Ulu Muda area comprises a number of forest reserves with a collective area of more than 160,000 hectares, the biggest of which is the Ulu Muda Forest Reserve. The recent discovery of a limestone hill in the Ulu Muda Forest Reserve is exciting because it does not appear in existing government maps.

First Sighting of Plain-Pouched Hornbill Aceros subruficollis

A trip to Ulu Muda Forest Reserve was made between 5th and 7th July 2004. Sightings were made during the evenings and mornings of the trip. In the evenings the birds were heading from north to south while they headed from south to north in the mornings. The mixed flocks of hornbills were identified as wreath hornbills Aceros undulatus and plain-pouched hornbills Aceros subruficollis. The latter was identified when several birds flew low.

Ulu Muda: the Undiscovered Forest

The Ulu Muda forest in the north-east of Kedah is perhaps the least known of the large chunks of lowland forests still present in Peninsular Malaysia. Most people have heard of Taman Negara, Endau-Rompin and Belum. But few have heard of this great swathe of forest bordering the Thai border and covering more than 120,000 hectares (35% of the total forested land area of Kedah).

The Ulu Muda is an important catchment area for three large man-made lakes, namely Pedu, Muda and Ahning, which collectively supply water for domestic, industrial and irrigation purposes to the three northern states of Kedah, Perlis and Penang.

Kawasan Ulu Muda memang merupakan satu kawasan yang patut dipelihara kerana keunikan flora dan faunanya. KEMBARA KAIL dalam beberapa trip lalu turut berpeluang mengecapi keindahan dan keunikannya. Dari segi spesis ikan, di sini turu wujud Scleropages Formosus ataupun kelisa tempatan di dalam empangan Muda. Selain itu, sungai-sungainya turut mempunyai spesies lain yang dicari pemancing seperti kelah, tengas dan sebarau.
